What follows is a description and comparison of various media intended to help you choose the medium that will best showcase your project. Which medium you use will be influenced by what you are trying to do.
Consider these questions as you think about which medium to use.
• What is the purpose of the finished product?
• How do you want to involve your audience? Will they have options about how to navigate through the piece, a few options, none, or many?
• What is the nature of the product? Family archival, entertainment, educational, informational, theatrical, dramatic, marketing?
• What will be the main source of your materials? Is there a lot of text, video, or graphics in your presentation?
• What other kind of materials will you be using? Text, still pictures, the internet, video interviews or other events, animation, graphic art, CD-ROMs, audio tapes?
• What kind of pace or tempo do you want the presentation to have?
DVD & CD-ROM
Output Format: DVD Disk / CD-ROM Disk. A DVD can be played on DVD players hooked to a television set or on computers that have a DVD player. CD-ROM can be played on computers.
Navigation: A DVD for your TV-DVD Player can be built in chapters.
Your audience has access to the controls (rewind, fast forward) then they can rewind or fast forward through the DVD by clicking on the Chapter subject to jump to that section movie. It is an excellent distribution medium.
The DVD/CD-ROM technology has transformed the landscape of information conveyance, raising expectations of what we can do and see in the computer environment.
CD-ROM which is capable of holding 650 megabytes of data, opens an exciting realm of possibilities in interactive applications to multimedia corporate presentations. This, combined with the low cost per megabyte, made CD-ROM an extremely attractive dissemination means for a wide range of material. Consumers rapidly acclimated to compact disc technology, recognizing the benefits of flexibility, portability, interactivity, depth of sight and sound, and ease of use. This has led to an incredible exponential proliferation of products. CD-ROM was the leading delivery medium and it is a great medium depending on the size of the application or project.
That being said, the cost of DVD replication is quickly changing the face of what was the main marketing medium. DVD has never been so inexpensive, compared to a CD-ROM and you get so much more in a DVD....
DVD discs can store from 4.7 GB, a Dual layered DVD disks hold almost 2x that . You can also play DVD's on your television set. DVD color resolution and detail is sharp. What this means in terms of authoring is a really dynamic potential, there is much more flash in a full-screen splash than a CD-ROM Movie Screen size of 320 X 240. It is potentially the most complex and creative format devised for multimedia content. It is an established international standard that is guaranteed to be stable and universally supported for a very long time.
Naturally, all depends on the interface, and how complex the authoring is, the tools used to create that interface, as well as how much content development is needed; including graphics, images, video, audio and music... (Another aspect that will influence the cost is whether it will be multi-lingual).
What are the disadvantages of DVD?
Vagueness of the DVD specification and inadequate testing of players and discs has resulted in incompatibilities. Some movie discs don't function fully (or don't play at all) on some players.
Some DVD players and drives can't read CD-Rs.
Some DVD players and drives can't read recordable DVDs.
Most DVD players and drives can't read DVD-RAM discs.
DVD uses digital compression. Poorly compressed audio or video may be blocky, fuzzy, harsh, or vague.
The audio downmix process for stereo/Dolby Surround may reduce dynamic range.
DVD doesn't fully support HDTV.
Variations and options such as DVD-Audio, DVD-VR, and DTS audio tracks are not supported by all players.
Why do I have problems playing DVDs on my computer?
There are thousands of answers to this question, but here are some basic troubleshooting steps to help you track down problems such as jerky playback, pauses, error messages, and so on.
Get updated software. Driver bugs are the biggest cause of playback problems, ranging from freezes to bogus error messages about regions. Go to the support section on the Web sites of your equipment manufacturers and make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics adapter, audio card, and DVD decoder (if you have a hardware decoder). Also make sure you have the latest update of the player program.
DVD-R Compatibility ~ Looking for a player?
Here are three players which feature excellent compatibility with DVD-R -- and each is less than $100!
JVC XV-N33SL
Sony DVP-NS325
Toshiba SD-3900
We want you to have a great experience with our videos. Our DVDs are region free, and we use high-quality DVD-R media to maximize compatibility with DVD players. The vast majority of DVD players work fine with DVD-R discs, but some — mostly older models — may have trouble.
AUTHORING TOOLS for CD-ROM & DVD Projects
There are many Authoring Tools which give us a wide array of possibilities, complexities and budgets in presentation style. From a slide presentation that has text, drawings, and scanned images to playful animated sequences into your menus. It starts with an overall concept and then presents more and more detail. Because it is interactive, you set up the navigation options for the viewer, you control, to a degree, where the viewer will go. We will assess the content of your project and discuss with you the right tool for your project. Authored projects can be distributed on CD-ROM or DVD. It generally incorporates video. The creator decides where the viewer can go by creating links to other pages. Viewers may have one option or several options to go to next, and can control how fast or slow they move through the presentation. This is good for presenting multiple levels of information. You can incorporate images, video images, QuickTime movies, computer animation, and printed materials. We design the color, page layout, and incorporate images, sound and text.
There are a number of different ways to create your family, promotional or educational vehicle, and the development of your "look" is really one the most fun aspects of the job. You have probably seen CD's & Website ingredients that really work for you. Make note of them! ...Also on what content you already have, from graphics, images, video, audio and music. It will be easier to be on the same page then. If you have specific ideas developed already, We love to hear them!
We'll assess if what you have, works in the proposed format, or if you have a lot of development needs, which depends on our arrived at approach, and the scope of the project i.e. "size', interface, authoring tools etc.
Multi-media presentation costs can vary considerably. The range of our project budgets have been $500.00 for a very simple interactive program on up.
